Welcome to the Amateur Atmospheric Noise Research Society

The Amateur Atmospheric Noise Research Society aka AANRS, was founded by amateur radio operators who have a keen interest in VLF monitoring of signals in the 200Hz - 12Khz frequency band. We are dedicated to the research project we have undertaken.

I was reading a book that contained very good material on VLF listening, the subject really appealed to me. A very good friend and collegue Kurt Theis WA6YDQ, was at the same time experimenting with VLF recievers, after a few days he convinced me to build my first VLF reciever. "WOW" is all I was able to say!. I immediately began to get results. My first VLF box was a modified BBB4 model designed by Stephen P. McGreevy.

I was hooked, I then built a second reciever with "high pass" filter to notch out the 60 Hz hum that is so abundant in our world. I also began to record some of the "noises" I was hearing. I sent a copy of my recording (an mp3 file) to my friend Kurt, he confirmed that he was hearing the same noises in California. Since I live in Nevada and was hearing the same signals we have concluded that there really is something to this phenomenon and thus the AANRS was born.

Here is what we are planning to do:
Group Discussion via our bulletin board system.
Group field outings, away from civilization this is the best way to hear VLF emissions.
LIVE 24 hour monitoring of VLF signals through this website using "REAL AUDIO"

What is this VLF noise ?
Simply put, the atmosphere is a great conductor of static electricity, and this static electricity can generate a radio emission in the VLF region of the audio spectrum. There is much information on the exact process for the occurance of this phenomenon on the web. The purpose of this website is to educate and interest people in this fabulous subject.

Are the recievers expensive to build ?
Not really, my first unit cost about $15 all the parts were purchased at "Radio Shack".

How can I join the AANRS ?
Simply follow this link fill out the form and wait for a rely via email, thats it!

Is there any cost to join the AANRS ?
No, not at all!!

Who pays for this website and the other projects the AANRS is involved in?
Good question! - The AANRS is funded through voluntary member contributions, money, time, components and knowlege make this all possible. There is no requirement to contribute, most due because they believe we have a good and worthwhile purpose.

How do we raise money for this project ?
Most people do not have the skills that is needed to build VLF equipment. We will sell prebuilt VLF reciever systems to those individuals who cannot make their own gear. we will also seek out low cost paid advertisement links from the various component vendors who sell the parts we need to make our gear.
